Can You Use a Landline Number on the WhatsApp Business Platform?

Already have a business landline? You can bring it to WhatsApp Business Platform without changing numbers. Here's how it works with WOZTELL.
Table of Contents
Your business phone number is already on your website, your storefront, and every document you've sent a customer. The last thing you want is to replace it just to get on WhatsApp.
You don’t have to. The WhatsApp Business Platform officially supports landline numbers. You can register the number your customers already know, and manage every conversation through WOZTELL — with automation, team inboxes, and integrations built on top.

What Meta's documentation says

According to Meta’s WhatsApp Business Platform documentation, eligible phone numbers must be:

  • Owned by your business
  • Include a country and area code (short codes are not supported)
  • Able to receive voice calls or SMS Landlines are explicitly listed as a supported number type, with voice call verification rated as the standard verification method.

What changes after registration (and what doesn't)

Registering your landline on the WhatsApp Business Platform does less than most people expect.

What stays the same:

  • Your number continues to work normally for regular calls and text messages.
  • Customers who already have your number saved can WhatsApp you straight away.

What changes:

  • The number can no longer be used with the WhatsApp Messenger consumer app.
  • If the number is already active on the WhatsApp Business App, you don’t necessarily need to delete it. Since May 2025, Meta supports WhatsApp Coexistence, which lets you connect an existing WhatsApp Business App number to the Cloud API without losing conversation history or disconnecting from the app.
  • Coexistence works through Meta’s Embedded Signup flow, facilitated by a certified Solution Partner like WOZTELL Sanuker. Availability may vary depending on your solution provider.
  • Once Coexistence is enabled, some WhatsApp Business App features are affected: disappearing messages and broadcast lists are disabled in the app (existing broadcast lists become read-only, and no new ones can be created).
  • Group chats remain available in the app but are not supported on the API side, so they will not appear in your WOZTELL inbox.

One thing to check first: is your landline behind an IVR?

Some business landlines route incoming calls through an IVR — the “press 1 for sales, press 2 for support” system. WhatsApp’s registration call cannot navigate a menu; it dials and waits for a person to answer. If your number is behind an IVR, the fix is straightforward:

  1. WhatsApp provides the specific phone numbers their registration call will come from.
  2. You add those numbers to an allowlist in your phone system.
  3. When the call arrives, it routes directly to a person or voicemail — bypassing the IVR menu — so the 6-digit verification code can be captured. Numbers that cannot be configured to accept this call are not supported on the platform.

What you unlock with the WhatsApp Business Platform

Once your landline is connected through WOZTELL, you’re on the full WhatsApp Cloud API. The difference in capability is significant:
  • Shared team inbox: your whole team handles conversations from one business number, with full visibility across assignments and history
  • Automation and chatbots: respond to enquiries, qualify leads, and route conversations around the clock without manual effort
  • Broadcast campaigns: send approved message templates to opted-in contacts at scale
  • CRM integration: sync every WhatsApp conversation into your existing CRM, helpdesk, or sales tools
  • WhatsApp Cloud Calling: switch from text chat to a voice call within the same conversation thread — no redialling, no switching platforms Learn more about WhatsApp Cloud Calling
